The challenge
Most scanner apps route private documents through someone else's servers in order to process them, store them and recognise their text. That is a poor trade for an identity document, a contract or financial paperwork. The gap in the market was a scanner that is private by architecture rather than private in its marketing.
Private by design
Every sensitive operation runs on the phone. Scanning, edge detection, clean up and text recognition all happen on the device, so no server ever sees a document, and the app carries no analytics or tracking. Privacy is a property of where the work happens, not a policy written after the fact.
What it does
Glean finds the edges of a page automatically and corrects the perspective, and a single tap removes shadows and glare, whitens the page and sharpens the text. On device recognition then layers the text back into the PDF, so every scan is searchable and copyable with no internet connection required.
Your storage, your choice
Every scan is saved on the device and is visible in the Files app, so the phone is always the primary copy. Google Drive sync is optional and off by default. Connect it and each scan lands in a folder you choose, which means the file is on your computer the moment you finish scanning, with no cables and no emailing a PDF to yourself. Disconnect at any time.
Three taps from paper to PDF
Scan, and Glean straightens the page and captures several pages in a row. Recognise, and the text is read on the device and layered into the file. Save, and the scan stays on the phone, gets shared, or goes to the Drive folder you picked.
Built and shipped
React Native with Expo, native iOS scanning and on device text recognition. Sign in with Apple or Google, and delete the account and its data at any time. Glean is live on the App Store as a TechFoundry product.
